When Audubon painted this pair, the passenger pigeon was the most numerous bird on Earth — flocks over the Ohio Valley took hours to pass and were counted in the billions. The last wild one was shot near Sargents, Ohio, in 1900. The last of all, Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914. This plate is how the sky used to look.
