You hear the rattle before you see the bird. Kingfishers patrol river bends like landlords, and nest in tunnels they dig three to six feet into the bank — a bird that excavates. Rarer still: she is one of the few North American birds more colorful than her mate. The rust-colored belt belongs to the female alone.
