Ohio's state wildflower carpets the spring woods in white — but slowly. A trillium takes about seven years from seed to first bloom, and it hires its gardeners: ants carry the seeds home for their oily handles, eat the handle, and plant the rest. Every April drift of trillium is decades of patient work by the forest floor.
